The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown, but scientists believe it's caused by a combination of genes and environmental factors. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder that occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the pancreas' insulin-producing beta cells. This process can take months or years to develop symptoms.

The thing is…if you have an acute disease, like an infection, you take antibiotics , maybe for a week, and they sell you a drug for a week. But if you have a chronic disease,as in “you will always have this”, then they go on selling you drugs…forever. Clearly more profitable.

I feel so strongly for some of these people who have struggled with the changes. Though I have gone through a long journey of getting to a WFPB existence, I was not making the best food choices even under an otherwise healthy-seeming diet. Only in the past 18 months or so have I been focused the actual nutrition and my actual needs and calorie requirements, which has led to great improvements in my health, weight, and energy. I still have a chronic condition that will never go away, but my medications have been lowered by 75% or more and I am in significantly less pain than before. It was very hard for me, though, to let go of the idea that I was an unwell person, and to have no hope that real improvements would ever happen, and used that mindset as an excuse to keep making indulgent or self-pitying food choices. It actually took a family trip where I was lagging behind and in terrible pain the whole time to face the reality that it was entirely up to me to improve my health condition. Nobody else could do it for me. Best of luck to anyone else out there struggling. The best advise I can offer you: Don't eat everything you want.

Its funny how, even people I'd gone to the gym with regularly, responded to the pandemic and gym closures so differently. Some of us became fitter than we'd ever been, started to grow our own vegetables, and built gardens - others seemed to completely give up and gained a lot of weight. I think the "why?" is very important when you make a decision to tske care of yourself. It needs to be bigger than you. If you're lucky and just love it, you'll always come up with a "why." But if its hard for you, you need to really think about why you want to live this way, and the "whys" need to be strong enough convictions that you don't bargain it all away - as in "my cholesterol numbers were xxx, now their x, maybe I can just do what i want and stop at xx?" I don't know, just a thought...

It’s laughable when Fauci says he represents ‘science’, just as the CDC and FDA are completely defunct organizations that are detrimental to human and environmental health. When the one person mentions that our encroachment and proximity to animals is what allows for zoonotic disease I just have to shake my head. We are human animals and are meant to be immersed in Nature. It’s the destruction of natural habitats and soil degradation that allows for pathogens to flourish as we break down the soil food web, not our proximity. Healthy ecosystems filled with diverse plants, animals, insects, etc, are full of beneficial bacteria and we should be living in direct connection with it all. It is incredibly important at this time to build Intentional Communities and Conscious Relationships, within ourselves, with each other, and with Nature ( Life ). To develop the skills that allow us to reintegrate with the natural world, growing our own food, being respectful and responsible towards water supplies and systems, exit and build strategies, private communication networks, new ways of understanding wealth and its creation, counter-economies, etc.

One very important fact is missing here, you have to eat a low fat diet. High fat is the main reason people claim they've tried a vegan diet but it didn't work. Going from highly processed junk to wfpb makes people lean toward nuts and seeds as more than 30% of their diet which causes a host of other problems.

Why not “experiment” with people with heart disease or stage 1 cancers? We all learned that diabetes can be reversed by changing food and doing more exercise years ago! We need to see further proof. It’s time that you get people with curable cancers (that are at stage 1 or 2) or people with heart diseases on these special diets and let folks see results. Diet can’t cure cancer per sé but it’d be interesting to see what the results of a month long plant-based diet yield.

My Dad challenged me to go on a plant based diet to avoid getting a stroke and many other things that he was experiencing I'm so glad I did it has really paid off. I am a Hallelujah Acres Health Minister am teaching this way of life to many. I as so convinced that this way of life is life giving, I am not perfect but have gotten so I don't put myself down for eating some junk plant food and it is happening a lot less. Genesis 1:29 is our creator's perscription for good health.

Amen! I'm also a Christian and WFPB Nutrition health coach, future physician, etc. It's great to see other Christians realize the power of this way of eating- which is not surprising given that the "Daniel diet/fast" in the Bible is WFPB, and God gave us plants to heal us! Let's keep doing our best to help others with their health, and most importantly lead them to Christ! God bless :)

This program was so refreshing and honest. As a vegan pharmacist I can’t tell you how often I recommend patients go on a whole food plant based diet. They feel hopeless and resigned to take over a dozen meds on a daily basis. They tell me their doctor never talked to them about a wfpb diet. I know how sneaky and dishonest BigPharma can be and this program showed patients’ true responses to being on these harmful meds and how they feel about BigPharma. I loved it when that patient had his own Independence Day; I straight up cried and felt so happy for him and the others. Please make more programs like this available in poorer, underserved cities like here in South Florida because the Latin and Haitian community here is large and animal based foods heavy.

While I love the message of the lifesaving WFPB lifestyle and I greatly appreciate the efforts here, I do feel a better treatment of Covid and vaccines needs to be had. Yes- address both factory animal farming and the role of underlying co-morbid factors such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. These are effectively treated with a WFPB diet. However, treating these alone do not remove the role of vaccines in certain circumstances. As we stand today, hundreds of millions of people do have underlying conditions and these people need protection in the present from deadly pathogens. That includes protection from healthy people who are carrying the virus. Furthermore it isn’t clear what role age alone plays in succumbing to Covid. I had a long nasty case at age 61 despite being WFPB for 10 years, exercising daily and BMI of 19- no co-morbid diseases. Think of people who get cancer and need chemo. They need to be protection because their immune system is weakened and they can’t get a vaccine. Think of the kids with leukemia. Think of vets exposed to burn pits who got cancer …. People can get cancer and require chemo. They will be killed by Covid. Community health is different from individual health and pandemics can be far more lethal and contagious than the flu. I found the anti-vax sentiments coming out of the WFPB community to be dreadful. Seriously! Are we going back to the days of polio, measles, mumps, smallpox, rubella etc? A highly contagious and lethal pathogen even worse than Covid may well come and we will need vaccines. By all means- take personal responsibility. But never ever forget that no person is an island. Your personal responsibility is 100% dependent on the work of others who grow and pick food, our natural environment and whether or not it is clean and safe, our society as a whole. Vaccines are about both individual health and community health. The truth is we exist not as individuals but as interconnected earthlings. No one got here of his or her own doing and no one lives as a result of their own efforts alone. By all means take personal responsibility for things you can do- put please understand that if you deny getting a vaccine in the early stages of a serious pandemic like Covid and then you fall off your bicycle and need hospital care- your refusal to get a vaccine might kill a kid receiving chemo for cancer in that hospital or kill a nurse who is slaving at tough hours to help people who need lifesaving care. The vaccines play an important role. The vax bashing led to over 500,000 deaths of the one million who died in this country from Covid- that’s a half million moms, dads, grandparents , brothers, sisters, kids and friends who did not need to die. It is a false dichotomy to set up WFPB eating as a strategy being opposed to vaccination. We need both.

This was a powerful reminder that freedom is possible, but most importantly, it's possible only when we're willing to take responsibility for our own health. This inspired me not to give up! The change will be a challenge, but it will not be nearly as challenging as a life with chronic disease.

Yep! As Dr. Esselstyn said in the Forks Over Knives documentary: "Some people call WFPB Nutrition extreme. Half a million people a year will have their chests opened up, and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme." 100% true, but he was a little too gracious- changing "some" to "most" is more accurate! Keep up the good work, btw the Forks Over Knives site is a great resource for recipes and info in general!

Vegans are always coming up with ways to "process" plants to look and taste like animal products. I don’t know any carnivore/keto people that try to make animal products mimic vegetables. Why do you think your vegan body is craving animal products so much that they have to create these hyper-processed foods? Maybe your super undernourished bodies are trying to tell you something.
